Leverage Points of the Body

Muscles are harder to control and produce more force.
Joints are easier to control and produce less force.
Head Control Behind the Head Not the Neck

When you control behind the neck your opponent will be able to produce more force against you
When you control behind your opponent’s head where there isn’t a very large mass of muscle you’ll be able to gain control of your opponent much easier.
It’s important when playing with the gi on to not always be gi dependant. Meaning you should not rely on just collar control to break your opponent’s posture inside the guard you should also rely on head control because it’ll be more effective in getting your opponent close to you.

Face Control

Shoulder pressure on your opponent’s face when on top will prevent him from turning his head and will make escapes for your opponent much harder. Examples

Shoulder pressure on face from top side control.
Shoulder pressure on face from top mount.

Shoulder Girdle

When in guard establishing an underhook near the shoulder girdle on your opponent is very effective.
When you clamp your hands together over your opponents shoulder girdle you will gain even more control.

Elbow Control

When controlling your opponents arms it helps to control them either in front of their elbow or behind their elbow. Examples:

When going for an armbar from the guard, it is ideal to get elbow control behind your opponent’s elbow.
When going for an omo plata it is ideal to get elbow control behind your opponent’s elbow to make it much harder for him to pull his arm out.
When you have top control many times it’s a good idea to have an underhook on one of your opponent’s arms and it is also a good option to walk your fingers up to make your opponent raise his arms up higher which makes it much harder for them to defend with that arm. It is ideal for you to walk your fingers up while placing pressure on the inside of your opponent’s elbow because it’ll be much harder for him to produce force back into you.
When controlling the arm in a takedown/throw scenario, when you hold your opponent’s sleeve by his elbow it is much harder for him to pull away then if you were holding further up by his forearm/wrist.

Knee Control

Just like the elbows, you product much more force against your opponent when you push on his knees rather than hit thigh or his calf.

Let take the basic elbow/knee mount escape for example. The ideal movement is the hip scape where you push on your opponent’s leg and scoot your body backwards out from under him. If you were to push on his thigh your opponent will be able to produce much more force back into you. However, if you push closer to his knee then he won’t be able to produce as much force and you’ll also make his leg move backwards which is ideal in this situation.
Another example is when you do the knee push scissor sweep. If you were to push at his leg with your foot on his thigh it’ll be much harder to get a large amount of force against him. However if you push your foot on his knee the sweep will be a lot more effective.

Ankle Control

Ankle control comes into play a lot with sweeps from the guard when your opponent stands up. If you were to hold them higher up by their calf they can fight against you much easier, however if you control them by their ankle then they will not be able to resist as well.

Control Closer to the Digits (Fingers and Toes)

Now you never want to grab a single finger or toe of your opponent, but in a tournament if you grab all four fingers at once or grab close too all of your opponent’s toes then you’re safe. When you grab in these areas you gain a lot of leverage. Example:

The “Old School” half guard sweep. When you grab closer to your opponent’s toes when doing this sweep you really gain a lot more leverage then if you grabbed the top of their foot or even their ankle in this situation.

The Hips or Hip Joint

The hips are extremely important in grappling. If you control the hips then you control your opponent. Here are some examples of controlling the hip joint to use to your advantage.

Controlling the hips in the Reverse Scarf Hold position. When you have the reverse scarf hold position and your hips are connected to your opponents hips you have a lot of control. Even better if you are able to lift your opponent’s hips off of the ground and actually wrap your arm over their body, and around their hip line it’ll be very hard for them to try to hip scape.
When doing the “Double Stack” guard pass many people control by the thighs and when they do this they don’t get as secure of a position as they could. It’s a great idea to control them right along the hip line and pull them up on your thighs lifting their hips off of the ground. This takes their hips out of the equation and makes it very very hard for them to move.
One of the most annoying things is when your opponent either gets you in Reverse Scarf Hold or another position from top half guard that I call “Reverse Half Guard”. When they do this they drop their hip down to the ground and it really takes away a lot of your movement. One of the best ways to work against this is to first of all know they have the option to do this and second place the palm of your hand right on their hip bone and stiff arm. This makes it harder for your opponent to drop their hip down close to you and also produces space for you. If you were to place your hand on their waist, leg, or butt you will not be able to stop them and they will still get a great position on you. So you should place pressure on their hip bone. This is just as important as stopping the cross face/head control from these positions in my opinion.

">
