Joe Moriera & Roy Harris Collar Chokes Review

from jiujitsugear.com

from Harkenndog

this was a VHS. Delivery was quick and quality was fine. Basically Professor Moreira goes over a series of chokes from the closed or open guard. They can be put into a series but they aren't always presented that way. There is a ton of info presented here (see below for a breakdown of tape) but it isn't presented in a very well organized way. It is like reading Shakespeare- u have to go over it a bunch of times and study it a while before u can break it down and really start making it useful to you. I haven't used it in class yet since I'm only really beginning to dig it now, but I now recognize that much of what is presented here is being used successfully on me, and I think that it will be tighten up and really improve my guard game.

4 taps out of 5. (Sperry Master Series gets 5)

Below is a copy of the notes I took on this today (at work, lol).

NOTES:

part 1
U can choke the guy from bottom top, back, anywhere u want
don't grab with the thumb, it makes hands tired and doesn't work well. grab with the fingers. for chokes and for flips, whatever. use 4 fingers. thumb free
use the sides, the blades of your wrists. never the top or bottom. u want the bone.
pull down on his gi to slide your hand inside his gi. the other hand then u can do whatever u want with it.
the first hand is most important. establish that first.
1st hand is in well, second hand not that well is okay.
1st hand good, second hand can be okay.
pull in with wrists first, than with arms and body to finish
first hand goes alonside neck from ear to jawbone, second hand sometimes can't... it doesn't have to as long as the first one is. the second one just has to

old his head so he can't move

part 2
1st u twist hands, then u pull the guy down into u to finish. if u can't pull him into u 2 finish, pull yourself up to finish
if u can't pull yourself up to finish because his hands are on your belly shnake, put your feet on his hips, push him away, pull him into u to finish
your elbows go back, make your shoulderblades touch, expand your chest to finish. elbows back chest foward to finish

part 3
sometimes u have choke in and he postures so u can't bring him down, go up, or shnakey to pu feet in.
let your hands slide down, twist ars opposite way, now u can shcnakey, put feet in his hips, push him away and finish with this opposite squeezing
lot of times guy will PUUUSH u into this move
with this move u will use outer edges of wrist rather than inner (which u would with this grip normally)

part 4
slide hands from ear to under jawbone. especially with the first hand. the inner blade of wrist, (or outer) should go from ear to under jawbone. tight.
if u do it right the choke will work very fast. if not, not.
if u don't have at least one hand perfect, let it go. it won't work against motivated opponent. not too low, not too high, just under jawbone. UNDER jawbone.

part 5
sometimes when u schnakey put feet in and push him away he'll fall into a sweep... don't let go of choke. follow him over and finish choke from sweep
finish by putting weight over the top of him. if he falls that's his problem. keep choking him.
if u do the choke well there are a lot of sweeps, armbars, take backs etc. that can build off of his defensing the choke.
during a fight u should take whatever he gives u, not just hold a choke that may not work

part 6
if u want the guy's neck, don't force the choke if he has posture. go for his arm, when he goes down to defend, get that one hand in good, then go for choke.
conversesly i want his arm... can't get it, attack his neck, he defends, take his arm.
u need to be sneaky, not just go fast

part 7
key to the choke is to get the first hand in good.
if u get 1st hand in good and he feels that he'll posture on your belly to deny the second hand.
don't let go with first hand. sit up. he will naturally not want to give u space and come towards u
as he does pull him in and bring other hand around his head over the back of his neck
put thumb inside gi to secure 4 fingers gripon your sleeve. twist your wrists and straighten your arms, then twist toward hand over his neck's elbow to

finish
lot of people like to reach 2nd hand in between crook of elbow of 1st hand. it's good too, but to do it u need to get the guy's head down. then reach under

and twist.
1st hand under. second hand over neck around head. thumb inside 1st hand lapel to control head. 4 finger grip. twist wrists, straighten arms, twist body to

side.
if he rolls go to mount.
if he jumps your legs keep the choke, tap him out.
he shouldn't get points because he can't show control even though he passed your guard.
don't let his head out or he gets 3 points.
once u start choke with hand over there are basically 2 ways to go.
if he pushes you down u use thumb inside technique
if he doesn't push u down u can reach entire hand under your elbow and choke him while you're still sitting up

part 8
4 fingers inside, twist towards body so inner blade goes against his neck.

part 9
once u have your arm over his neck right he can't pull his head away.
if u don't get it quite right and he pulls away, u can nail basic scissors choke
they free their head, switch to other choke
u need to make a game of switching chokes in fight. he defends basic scissors, sit up for arm over, he defends that, back to scissorsif i want to choke the

guy i push his hand across, bring arm over his neck, bring his lapel over to secure that grip, then reach ohter hand in to get choke, then let over neck hand

come around for scissors
want neck but his posture is too good bring arm across. lock legs high to control torso. bring arm across back of neck, contro his head. bring hand under to

get lapel. once i've got it bring 2nd hand around for x choke. 2nd hand not as important as first. then twist body to fininsh choke.
push arm across, push it far away, then lock him with legs and arm across. push lapel open to make overneck hand deep.
then pass lapel to overhand neck with second hand, bring second hand around his arm, choke out. or can go for arm or back

part 10
use upper body when u choke
u've almost got it but he is motivated.
snakey and twist upper bodymove upper body from side to side. he won't help u in a fight, u need to snakey, twist from side to side. it puts your hands in a

better position
u don't have his neck... snakey side to side, u'll get it. as soon as u move your body give u power to finish that your wrists don't have

part 11
snake to stay in same postition or to move away
you're in his side control u snakey to make space to escape
u've got handover nck to get choke. u snakey to stay tight but be in a better postiion to finish. or to transition to armbar
don't snake so far u give them room to defend.
if they're mounted snake big to escape. if you're choking snake small to finish

part 12
strengthen your grip by hanging a gi over a pull up bar and doing pull ups while gripping the gi... use 4 fingers, u don't need your thumb. don't use thumb.

part 13
mechanics and arm postioning
4 fingers inside twist in. twist wrists 1st, then pull them towards u.
keep forearm close to the side of their face with 2nd hand. twist wrist, move body to finish
can't pull them down, go up
can't go up, snake push them flat and sit up
can't do either, slide down hands, then snake, push them flat, twist hand oppostie way to finish
pull t heir head down, keep elbow tight over neck, 4 finger gi, twist their body. if he falls mount
if he jumps don't let go. twist, make him tap. if he falls, mount, finish by bringing pressure across his neck
if he lets u sit up with arm across back of his neck reach hand uner your elbow of 1st hand
if he defends go for 4 fingers
if he pulls head out go scissors
bring his arm across his own body. lock him down with legs and head over neck. feel lapel to hand over neck. bring hand under his pit and go for scissors

part 14
to choke u
1. need control
2. need to have good base. top or bottom
3. break his base.
if u have those 3 choke will work for sure.
1st get control, make sure u have solid base
now break his balance to finish choke

part 15
against other black belts JM needs to stay away 'cause any mistake he'll take the choke
if the guy stays low start with his neck.
doesn't mean u'll stay with it. u can always move for something else. he defends that go for next. he goes for that go for next. stay busy. don't give him

time to think. make him play your game, defend your game. don't give him a chance to make u play inside his game.

part 16
if he gets his 1st hand in don't let it stay. posture up immediately. fight it. control his other hand always
they cohoke u from in your guard push them away and control their arms, then pull them back in so they're in your world.

part 17
if he banana defends 1st hand use that 2 do the hand across hand over neck choke, maybe transition to take his back or go for hand over neck 2nd hand under

pit choke
"zis zhiuzhhhzssuu"
on banana defense choke need to kick his leg flat to break him down
person in top postion needs to stay tight at all times. break his base. then go for choke, take back, lion choke whatever.
from turtle postion, very common, stay tight, weight on him. knee inside him, put knee between thigh and elbow. other knee out for base
once knee is centered don't center your weight on him or he can sweep. before knee is centered its okay 'cause u can switch to other side

part 18
from 17 turtle postioin.
make hand go inside. f*ckingn put hand inside whether he wats it or not. if he's strong push his face with knuckles along side of his face and then slide

hand in
